Launched TODAY: Our Survivor Storytelling Zine “Woven Voices”

Storytelling has always been a core pillar of SOAR’s work, whether through uplifting abortion stories by & for South Asians or supporting the leadership of South Asian survivors.

In May of 2022, SOAR launched our Survivor Storytelling Pilot Program, supporting 16 South Asian survivors of gender-based violence to reclaim their stories for healing & change, on their own terms. The program consisted of a Storytelling Workshop, ongoing Story Circles, & additional opportunities to build community & continue working on their stories (learn more here!).

A little over one year later, we are honored to share the launch of our Zine WOVEN VOICES which was co-created by and features the stories of those survivor leaders, told through narratives, poetry, videos, artwork, & more. We are so grateful to each individual who trusted us with their voices (including some of you), and are so proud to share them with all of you! We hope that you’ll share this Zine with the survivors you serve and within your communities.

As advocates, you all know that by centering survivors' experiences & voices, we can impact policy, build leadership, drive cultural change, and most importantly, support collective healing. By empowering South Asian survivors, we move towards a future free of violence for us all.

As you engage with these stories, we invite you to read the reflective prompts following each piece. We encourage you to be gentle with yourself, connect with others, and take the time and space you need to process. And if you have ever experienced harm or abuse, we hope you feel seen and held through these stories.

With that, we invite you to weave your voice in with those published here.
